John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I AM the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.”
I don’t think there is any more misunderstood or problematic verse for Christians in the whole Bible.
First. Most study Bibles will have the words “I AM” in all caps, indicating that Jesus was not actually referring to His personality or physical incarnation, but to the same “I AM THAT I AM” that spoke to Moses from the burning bush. He was speaking as a channel for the Great I AM, the Supreme Being of which we are all a small part.
And for certain, “no one can come to the Father, except through the I AM”.
A spiritual teacher I know and love put it very well. This is an excerpt from “Achieving Oneness with the Higher Soul” by Master Choa Kok Sui: (the remainder of this post is mostly from this book, with a few additions for clarity, and some wording changed)
The I AM is the soul. The I AM is immortal. Who are you? I Am that I AM. You are the soul. You are immortal.
Genesis 1:26 of the Bible says, “Let us make man in our image.” When God created people, He created them in His image. This has nothing to do, however, with physical characteristics. It does not mean that God looks like us with two eyes, two ears, and a mouth. Being created after God’s image means that a person partakes of God’s Divine Essence. In John 10:34, Jesus said, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I have said you are gods?'” Psalm 82:6 gives the same statement: “You are gods. You are children of the Most High.” That is why the Lord’s Prayer begins with “Our Father in heaven,” not with “Jesus’ Father in heaven.”
We are all children of God. In each person, there is a divine essence or divine spark. In Buddhism, there is a Buddha nature in each person. In the Christian religion, there is a “Christ in you, the hope of glory”. In Hinduism, there is a Jivatma or incarnated soul in each person.
What is the name of this divine essence? It identified itself to Moses as the “I AM THAT I AM”. In Hebrew, this is Eieh. In Sanskrit, this is known as So Ham, or Tatwamasi. There is a universal I AM. There is a micro I AM within every person.
Jesus says in John 14:6, “I AM the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The Lord Jesus literally means that the I AM – the soul / divine essence within you, is the way, the truth, and the life. “The Divine Father” here refers to the Divine Spark in every person.
“I AM the life” means that the higher soul is the source of life. When the soul unplugs it’s energy from the body, the body dies.
“I AM the truth” means that the higher soul is the inner voice of truth and conscience.
“I AM the way” means that the incarnated soul cannot unite with the Divine Father without uniting with the higher soul first. One must first unite with their micro, individual “I AM” in order to unite with the Divine Father.
The divine spark in every person is a part of God. It is made in the essence of God. To experience union with the divine spark or the Divine Father within you, you must first pass through the I AM or the higher soul.
Spiritually speaking, the Lord Jesus was and is connected to every person’s individual I AM. This is what it means that He was the Son of Man. He was and is connected to the divine essence of every person. And every person who passes through their personal I AM does connect with and pass through the spirit of Christ, whether they know Him by that name or not.
